Deveison Figueiredo has defeated Joe Benavidez for the second time, this time to become the undisputed UFC Flyweight Champion.

The pair came head-to-head at UFC Fight Island 2 on Sunday.

From the outset, it was Figuieredo who was in control of the fight, stunning Benavidez with heavy hands and knocking him to the canvas three times within the opening frame.

After the third knockdown, Figuieredo followed Benavidez down, quickly transitioning to his back and sinking in a brutal rear naked choke which stretched his neck and back, separating him from his consciousness at 4:48 of the first round.

The first time the two fought, at UFC Fight Night: Benavidez vs Figuieredo in February 2020, the bout was mired in controversy.

After missing the championship weight of 125lb by 2.5lb, Figuieredo lost his opportunity to gain the Flyweight belt.

He went on to defeat Benavidez via TKO in the second round, after a head clash left Benavidez stunned and vulnerable to the follow-up strikes.

The fight was intended to fill the championship void left by abdicating champion Henry Cejudo, who had given up his belt to concentrate on the Bantamweight division.

This result left the Flyweight division without a champion, with the rematch being booked shortly thereafter.

Now, though, the Flyweight championship is in no doubt.

After such a dominant performance, Figuieredo looks to be in control of the division, with a third fight against Benavidez nowhere on the horizon.

With Henry Cejudo ostensibly retired, the UFC will have to look down the rankings for potential challengers.

New Zealand's own Kai Kara-France, at number eight in the rankings as of today, is certainly one of those options.

However, number seven-ranked Askar Askarov stamped his place in the Flyweight top ten on Sunday with a decision victory over oft-touted Brazilian prospect Alexandre Pantoja.

Whatever is next for the Flyweights, with a violent and exciting champion like Figuieredo at the top, the division is not going away in a hurry.
