Teofimo Lopez Jr. (16-0, 12 KO) shut down pound-for-pound ranked Vasiliy Lomachenko (14-2, 10 KO) on Sunday, October 18, earning himself a unanimous decision victory over 12 rounds.
Lopez established himself early, racking up points while Lomachenko had very little offensive output during the first six rounds. Lopez managed to shut down the angle-changes of Lomachenko with his own footwork and counter right uppercut.
From the seventh round, Lomachenko increased his output and won some rounds, though the judges scored the bout 116-112, 119-109 and 117-113 for Lopez.
The commentators at the time had the fight a 114-114 draw and were surprised at the result, especially at the 119-109 scorecard which implies that Lomachenko only won one round.
The CompuBox numbers indicate that Lopez out-landed Lomachenko at a rate of 183 to 141.
The event took place at the MGM Grand Conference Center in Las Vegas. With the victory, Lopez became the IBF lightweight champion, as well as unifying the WBA, WBO and WBC titles which were held by Lomachenko.
This is the first time in history that all four of the recognised lightweight world championship belts have been unified.
Lomachenko seemed dejected afterwards, stating that he believed that he had done enough to win the fight. It seems likely that the two men will meet again in the squared circle.
