The 2021 BNZ National Boxing Championships are being postponed until next year.

The Boxing New Zealand National Executive, in consultation with the Wanganui Boxing Association, made the decision following the government announcement advising the extension of Level 4 lockdown in Auckland.

The championships will now take place on January 11-15, 2022.

They will be still held in Wanganui and will be known as the 2021 National Championships, says a statement released on behalf of the organisers.

"The decision to move the Boxing New Zealand showcase event to January 2022, will give BNZ more confidence that by then, the Government will have a more stable management plan in place.

"The extended period of time before the championships will allow the gyms throughout the country to get up and running again, and allow boxers adequate time to prepare for the sports pinnacle event.

"Next year is a big milestone in the history of Boxing New Zealand, with the sport recognising and celebrating 120 years since the New Zealand Boxing Association was established in Christchurch in 1902."
